Preheating your oven is a crucial step in baking, especially for recipes like Honey Butter Skillet Cornbread. When you preheat, you ensure that your cornbread begins cooking at the right temperature, which is essential for achieving that perfect rise and texture. A hot oven allows the baking powder to activate quickly and evenly, giving your cornbread a light and fluffy consistency. Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and allow it to come to temperature while you prepare the rest of your ingredients.

Ingredients

1 cup cornmeal

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 cup buttermilk

1/3 cup honey

2 large eggs

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for greasing the skillet)

1/4 cup honey (for drizzling on top)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (for spreading)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a 10-inch cast-iron skillet or oven-safe skillet in the oven to heat.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar until well combined.

Mix Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, beat together the buttermilk, honey, eggs, and melted butter until smooth and well blended.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the batter; a few lumps are okay.

Prepare the Skillet: Carefully remove the heated skillet from the oven using oven mitts. Add the vegetable oil to the skillet, making sure to coat the bottom and sides. Pour the cornbread batter into the hot skillet, spreading it evenly.

Bake the Cornbread: Return the skillet to the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Make Honey Butter: While the cornbread is baking, prepare the honey butter by mixing the softened butter and honey in a small bowl until smooth and well combined.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the skillet from the oven and let the cornbread cool for a few minutes. Drizzle with additional honey, then serve warm with the honey butter on the side for spreading.
