1/2 lb ground pork

1/2 cup breadcrumbs (preferably Italian-seasoned)

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (or 2 tbsp dried)

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 large egg

1 tsp salt

1/2 tsp black pepper

1/2 tsp Italian seasoning

_For the Marinara Sauce:_

2 cups canned crushed tomatoes (or tomato sauce)

1 clove garlic, minced

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 tsp olive oil

1 tsp sugar (to balance acidity)

1/2 tsp dried basil

1/2 tsp dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

_Other Ingredients:_

4 hoagie rolls

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Meatballs:

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, parsley, minced garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix until fully combined, but avoid over-mixing. Shape the mixture into 12 equal-sized meatballs.

      Cook the Meatballs:

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until they are cooked through and browned.

          Make the Marinara Sauce:

While the meatballs are baking, heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic; sauté until the onion is translucent (about 2-3 minutes). Pour in the crushed tomatoes, sugar, dried basil, and dried oregano. Season with salt and pepper. Let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

              Combine Meatballs and Sauce:

Once the meatballs are cooked, gently add them to the marinara sauce, making sure they are well-coated. Allow them to simmer together for an additional 5-10 minutes so that the flavors meld.

                  Assemble the Subs:

Preheat your broiler on low. Split the hoagie rolls and lightly toast them under the broiler for about 2 minutes, until golden. Spoon a generous amount of meatballs and sauce into each hoagie roll, then top with shredded mozzarella cheese.

                      Melt the Cheese:

Return the assembled subs to the broiler for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

                          Serve:

Carefully remove the subs from the oven and let cool slightly. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Serve hot and enjoy your homemade meatball subs!
