Ingredients

12 lasagna noodles

1 pound ground beef

1 pound italian sausage (casings removed)

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

28 oz can crushed tomatoes

6 oz tomato paste

2 tbsp fresh basil, chopped (or 2 tsp dried basil)

1 tsp dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

15 oz ricotta cheese

1 egg

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Noodles: In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and lay them flat on parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef, Italian sausage, diced onion, and minced garlic. Cook until the meat is browned and the onions are translucent, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.

Add Tomatoes and Herbs: To the meat mixture, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, chopped basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir well and let simmer for about 15 minutes, allowing flavors to meld.

Prepare the Cheese Mixture: In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, half of the grated Parmesan, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until smooth.

Layer the Lasagna: In a 9x13 inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom. Place 4 lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by one-fourth of the meat sauce, then top with one-third of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat this layering process two more times, finishing with a final layer of meat sauce and the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses on top.

Bake the Lasagna: Cover the dish with aluminum foil (to prevent sticking, spray the foil with a little cooking spray). Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Let it Rest: After removing from the oven, allow the lasagna to cool for about 15 minutes before slicing. This resting time will help the layers set and make serving easier.

Serve: Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot. Enjoy your homemade lasagna with a side salad and garlic bread!
