Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (plus more for sprinkling)

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup unsweetened apple sauce

1/4 cup milk (or plant-based milk)

1 large egg

2 tablespoons melted butter (or coconut oil)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease your donut pan with cooking spray or butter.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the apple sauce, milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spatula or wooden spoon until just combined; do not over-mix.

Fill the Pan: Using a piping bag or a spoon, carefully fill each cavity of the donut pan about 3/4 full with the batter. Avoid overfilling to ensure the donuts rise nicely.

Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a donut comes out clean.

Cool: Let the donuts cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare the Cinnamon Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and additional cinnamon. If you prefer a thicker coating, you can also add the powdered sugar to this mix.

Coat the Donuts: Once the donuts are completely cool, brush each donut lightly with melted butter (or you can gently dip them) and then roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated.

Serve: Arrange the donuts on a plate and serve fresh. Enjoy the delightful sweetness and warm cinnamon aroma with your morning coffee or as a lovely afternoon treat!
