Ingredients

2 cups ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 small onion, diced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 large egg

1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped (plus more for garnish)

Extra mozzarella for topping

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti pasta for about 8-10 minutes until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare Sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and diced onion, cooking until the onion is translucent (about 5 minutes). Stir in crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.

Mix Cheese Filling: In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, and chopped fresh basil. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper, mixing until well combined.

Combine Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the sauce, stirring until the pasta is well-coated.

Layer in Baking Dish: In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti and sauce mixture. Dollop half of the ricotta mixture over the pasta, then sprinkle a third of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Add the remaining ziti and sauce mixture on top, followed by the rest of the ricotta mixture and finish with additional shredded mozzarella to cover the top.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with additional fresh basil before serving.
