Ingredients

6 slices of thick brioche or challah bread

2 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 cup apples, peeled and diced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon butter, melted (for greasing the baking sheet)

Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Maple syrup (for serving, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet by greasing it lightly with melted butter.

Prepare the Bread: Cut each slice of brioche or challah into 4 equal strips, creating French toast sticks. Place them in a large bowl.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until thoroughly combined.

Combine with Apples: Gently fold in the diced apples, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

Soak the Bread Sticks: Pour the custard mixture over the bread sticks, making sure to coat each one well. Let the sticks soak for about 10 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure they absorb the mixture evenly.

Prepare for Baking: Arrange the soaked French toast sticks on the greased baking sheet in a single layer. If desired, sprinkle brown sugar over the top to create a caramelized crust.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, flipping the sticks halfway through to ensure they are golden brown and crispy on all sides.

Serve: Once done, remove from the oven and let them cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar if desired, and serve warm with maple syrup for dipping.
